Admissions Requirements

How can you join OCOM?

There are many different roads when venturing into medical school: the competencies and accomplishments we seek go well beyond grades and scores. OCOM considers many aspects of an applicant including: the whole person, interest in serving the regions included in OCOM’s mission, potential for success in the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree program, commitment and aptitude as a future practicing osteopathic physician, and their compassion, knowledge, and commitment to health care.

  • Applicants must earn a baccalaureate degree prior to matriculation from an accredited college or university in the United States

    Undergraduate prerequisite coursework:

    • Biological Sciences: One year with laboratory (8 semester hours/12 quarter hours)

    • Physics: One year (6 to 8 semester hours/9 to 12 quarter hours)

    • Inorganic Chemistry: One year with laboratory (8 semester hours/12 quarter hours)

    • Organic Chemistry: One year with laboratory (8 semester hours/12 quarter hours)

    • English: One year (6 semester hours/8 quarter hours)

    • Six (6) additional science hours are highly recommended.  OCOM recommends courses in the 300/400 level or beyond in subjects that will enhance performance in medical school such as Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Genetics, Microbiology and Immunology.

Students must obtain a grade of “C” or better in each of the required courses above to fulfill the prerequisite course requirement. Courses with equivalent content will be reviewed. OCOM is not flexible regarding required prerequisite courses.

  • • Recommended Cumulative GPA of 3.2

    • Recommended Science GPA of 3.2

    • Recommended 500 Total MCAT Score administered up to three years prior to the date of matriculation.

  • Letters of recommendation may not be written by a relative, including blood relatives and relatives through marriage. All letters of recommendation must be original, on professional letterhead, signed by the evaluator, and sent directly to AACOMAS.

    • The first letter must be from an osteopathic physician (DO) or an allopathic physician (MD). Although a letter from an osteopathic physician is not required, it is strongly recommended. While shadowing a DO is not required, applicants who have shadowing experience with a DO demonstrate commitment to the profession and understanding of the practice of osteopathic medicine.

    • The second letter must be from a pre-medical advisory committee or science Ph.D. faculty member familiar with the academic work of the applicant.

*any questions or extenuating circumstances, please contact the admissions department

  • OCOM is not accepting transfer students at this time.

OCOM may accept students who are US-born citizens, naturalized citizens, and permanent residents. OCOM requires applicants who have completed coursework at foreign institutions to be evaluated for United States equivalency by one of the evaluation services listed on the AACOM website: http://help.unicas.com:8888/aacomasHelpPages/instructions/index.html.

  • Immunizations: using CastleBranch; all vaccination requirements must be fully met or “in progress” by July 1. Accepted students who do not meet these requirements may have their offer rescinded. All in-progress requirements must be completed by recommended schedule; Clinical experiences are part of the core curriculum to obtain the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree, and, therefore, OCOM does not waive vaccination or student health requirements for religious, medical, or personal preferences.
