Orlando College of Osteopathic Medicine (OCOM) provides a list of third-party lenders available offering private student loans. OCOM is not currently eligible for Federal Student Aid (“the Title IV program”). Current federal regulations (specifically the Higher Education Act, Section 102) specify that a proprietary institution of higher education must meet the basic Title IV eligibility criteria and in addition must have been legally authorized to provide (and have continuously been providing) the same or a substantially similarly educational program for at least two consecutive years and be accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting agency prior to applying for the Title IV program eligibility. OCOM currently anticipates that the institution will receive its accreditation and graduate its first class in 2028. 6. Service
The Drs. Kiran & Pallavi Patel Global University (KPGU) and its constituent college, the Orlando College of Osteopathic Medicine (OCOM), uphold a commitment to academic freedom and free speech. As a private institution, this commitment is rooted in its institutional values and educational mission, rather than being mandated by the First Amendment, which primarily restricts government entities.
Statement Regarding Censorship for KPGU/OCOM
-
The university's approach to censorship is guided by the following principles, which are common across many higher education institutions:
Academic Freedom: Faculty members have the freedom to conduct research, publish their findings, and teach their subjects without unreasonable institutional interference. This allows for the exploration of complex and controversial topics necessary for the advancement of knowledge.
Freedom of Speech: All members of the university community—students, faculty, and staff—have the right to express their views on matters of public concern. While this right is protected, it's not absolute. The university may place reasonable restrictions on the "time, place, and manner" of speech to maintain order and a safe environment for all.
Distinction between Personal and Institutional Speech: Individuals within the university are free to express their personal opinions. However, they should not present these views as representing the official stance of the university. This distinction is crucial for maintaining the institution's integrity and protecting its academic mission.
-
Practices at OCOM and KPGU are designed to balance these freedoms with the institution's professional and educational responsibilities. The goal is to foster an environment of open inquiry and critical thinking, while also ensuring that all activities and expressions are in alignment with the standards of the medical profession and the university's code of conduct.
It's important to note that, as a Florida institution, KPGU/OCOM operates within a state that has implemented laws affecting higher education, such as the "Stop WOKE Act" (House Bill 7). While such laws can create an environment of concern regarding censorship and academic freedom, especially at public institutions, private universities like KPGU have a degree of autonomy in shaping their processes to protect these core values.
