Continuing Medical Education

  • The Orlando College of Osteopathic Medicine (OCOM) is accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) to provide continuing medical education for physicians as a Category 1 CME sponsor. OCOM strictly adheres to the standards and regulations provided by the AOA governing the provision and documentation of CME programming.

Our Continuing Medical Education (CME) activities prioritize needs-based assessments, evidence-based teaching methods, innovation, and interprofessional collaboration. We promote a culture of continuous learning, mentorship, and scholarship, supporting our faculty, clinical partners, and healthcare practitioners in delivering exceptional patient care in Central Florida, nationally, and globally.

  • This policy aims to establish guidelines for the advertising and promotion of CME activities offered by the Orlando College of Osteopathic Medicine (OCOM). Adherence to these guidelines is essential to maintain the integrity, independence, and objectivity of our educational programs.

  • CME activities provided by OCOM must be free from the control of any commercial interest. Advertising and promotional activities should not compromise the scientific integrity, balance, or objectivity of CME content.

Advertising and Promotion Guidelines

  • Content Approval: All promotional content related to CME activities must be approved by the Director of Faculty Development or designated individuals responsible for content oversight.

  • Any entity involved in advertising or promotional activities must disclose any financial relationship with commercial interests relevant to the CME content. Advertising and promotion must focus on the educational value of the CME activity and avoid any language that implies product endorsements or bias.

  •  If promotional materials are distributed, they must provide a fair balance of information, addressing both the benefits and risks associated with any products or services mentioned.

  •  If a CME activity is supported by commercial interests, clear and accurate acknowledgment of the support must be provided in promotional materials and at the beginning of the CME activity.

Review and Monitoring

  • The Director of Faculty Development and designated individuals will regularly review advertising and promotional materials to ensure compliance with this policy.

  • The Director of Faculty Development will monitor CME activities for any signs of commercial bias and take corrective action if necessary.

  • This policy will be periodically reviewed to ensure its relevance and effectiveness. Amendments may be made as needed.

CME Activity Guidelines

The Orlando College of Osteopathic Medicine CME Office ensures all activities awarded AOA Category 1 CME Credit comply with the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) standards

  • For any activity seeking Category 1 credit through the Orlando College of Osteopathic Medicine, our CME Office must be involved from the initial planning stages. This involvement is required:

    • Before finalizing dates, speakers, or content

    • Prior to creating or distributing any activity announcements

To uphold accreditation standards and streamline the approval process, it's essential to engage with our Continuing Medical Education (CME) Office at the early stages of planning.

  • Activity requests can be submitted through the OCOM Intranet. (Link accessible to OCOM Faculty only).
