OCOM’s Commitment to Sustainability: Investing in Solar Energy, Reducing Plastic Waste & Supporting EV Charging

At the Orlando College of Osteopathic Medicine (OCOM), sustainability isn’t just a goal—it’s a core value embedded in our campus operations. Our commitment to eco-friendly practices ensures a greener future for both our students and the Central Florida community. Here’s how we’re making a difference:

Harnessing the Power of the Sun

With an estimated annual production of 550,000+ kWh, our solar panels generate enough clean energy to:

  • Power approximately 50 homes for an entire year

  • Offset nearly 400,000 pounds of CO₂ emissions annually

  • Run more than 5,500 LED light bulbs continuously for a year

This investment is not only an environmentally conscious decision but a financially responsible one, as our system will pay for itself in just over five years. After that, OCOM will enjoy nearly 20 years of free power, reinforcing our commitment to a greener future. By year 25, the return on investment (ROI) is projected to be an incredible 485+%.

This clean energy reduces our carbon footprint, contributing to a healthier planet.

Sun Study & Smart Construction for Efficient Energy Use

OCOM conducted a Sun Study to optimize building design, minimize indoor heating, and lower air conditioning needs. Our campus also features:

  • 8-inch thick concrete walls: Enhance insulation, promote better air circulation, and reduce heating/cooling demands.

  • Argon gas-filled, double-pane windows: Prevent heat transfer, keeping interiors cooler and reducing energy use.

  • White reflective roof: Made from durable rubberized materials, it reflects sun rays, further lowering cooling costs.

  • Energy-saving indoor technology: TVs and monitors throughout campus are designed for optimal energy efficiency.

Reducing Plastic Waste: One Bottle at a Time

To combat plastic waste, we’ve installed reusable filtered water bottle stations across campus. To date, these stations have saved over 14,000 plastic water bottles from entering landfills. This simple yet impactful effort helps protect the environment and encourages a sustainable lifestyle among students and staff.

EV Charging Stations: Driving Towards a Greener Future

We’re proud to offer 6 EV charging stations on campus, supporting students and employees who drive electric or hybrid vehicles. By providing this resource, OCOM helps reduce overall car emissions, promoting clean transportation options in the region.

Eco-Friendly Practices in Every Detail

Sustainability is reflected in our daily operations as well:

  • Environmentally friendly cleaning solutions are used throughout the campus, ensuring a healthy indoor environment.

  • Energy-efficient appliances and lighting reduce electricity consumption.

A Sustainable Future for OCOM

At OCOM, sustainability isn’t just a checkbox—it’s a commitment woven into our foundation. From solar energy and eco-friendly construction to waste reduction and clean transportation, we are proud to lead by example in modern medical education. Together, we are building a greener future for healthcare and beyond.
